This is me with my cousin Marion, I stayed with her a couple of days in Kingston. She invited her four children and their spouses over at the second evening I was there. Some of the grandchildren were there also.

The living room was filled up with relatives I hardly knew and I was a bit nervous about meeting up with my family. Although this was also the reason for me to go on this trip. The memories I had were pretty vague, about pictures that were taken in Amsterdam by the canal. And some young people sleeping in our living room.

What if it would be all awkward to see them again? Or we would have nothing in common?

But it didn’t. And we had lots to talk about, new stories and old ones. About my father being the tourguide, how my mum made her pudding in the shape of a lion (I still have that mould).

But also I learned about how my father, their uncle, had a lot of fun in Canada with my cousins. Singing songs they taught him in the car, enjoying the elaborate breakfasts with eggs and sausages. In my minds eye I see him, walking down the streets and taking the ferry to discover new places. Talking to random people he met on the way. Being late to meet up with the family because he lost track of time. It made me happy to think: Here I am now, walking that same street, looking at the ferry crossing the water.

My cousin Wilma on the right and my second cousin @becky.dew on the left. Me, being the diva I am, taking up all the space in the middle 😜 These wonderfull women really made me feel at home here in Picton these last few days. I also have been feeling a little homesick, I think because meeting my family also confronts me with missing my parents.

It has been an overwhelming beautiful challenging messy stormy gorgeous connecting trip up until now. And I loved all of it! Well maybe the migraine episode just a little less 😉 Will post some more pictures and stories with other relatives later 💕

Just a little add on, I don’t know how many of you lost one or both of your parents and how this makes you feel?

I tend to maybe discard it when talking to people like ‘Well I wasn’t that young anymore so it’s okay’. And while I still believe that losing a parent before you are an (young) adult is way worse I also want to acknowledge that it hurts going through the process of loss at any age. I know I really don’t want people to feel uncomfortable when they find out both of my parents have passed away. But at the same time I do want to be able to talk about it without feeling the need to downplay the fact that this has had an impact on me and my life (both in good and in challenging ways).

So for anyone who needs to read this. It’s okay to miss them, feel hurt or lost at moments even if they passed away years ago. To feel confusion or anything else around the fact that they are not here anymore. And have the occasional random thought ‘Maybe I should call mom (dad) and tell her (him) about.. Oh wait I cannot call her’

I will be posting in Dutch again soon, but it felt logical during this trip not to 😉😘

Lake Ontario 🫶

Another day with spent with my family, tasted campfire flavored icecream for the first time. It was amazing.

So grateful to be here, getting to know my cousins and their children. It has taken me long enough to get here, about 46 years 🤣 I don’t know why, but it doesn’t matter anymore. I am here now. Connecting, collecting memories and stories and feelings 💕

Kingston - Fear and drinks 🎉

Practiced overcoming my fear of empty pools today. Don’t ask me why, they freak me out. I tried to be patient with myself, lap after lap. Just when I thought my nervous system had calmed down I did something with my foot which made the water splash behind me and thus gave my heart another round of excitement 😅😭 Is anybody with me on this fear?

Other than that I had a lovely day, with sun, a walk around town and a surprising ending when meeting @ather_hadi in the park. He took me out for drink and a nice conversation, perfect way to complete my time in Kingston 🫶
